NYPD responded to a shooting at the Bayview Houses around 9 p.m. on January 2nd.

On arrival police located 15-year-old Javel Lawton suffering from gunshot injuries to his torso, near a playground. Lawton was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital, where he died of his injuries. 

According to AMNY Chief of Detectives, Joseph Kenny said Lawton was approached by four or five male suspects who police believe to be affiliated with the street gang known as APES, a sub of the Bloods. The suspects were outfitted in hoods, masks, and gloves. “One male from the crowd wearing light blue clothing, which could indicate affiliation with the Crips gang, pulls out a pistol,” said Joseph Kenny.

Investigators have not confirmed if Lawton was affiliated with a gang.
