Update: The dismembered torso of Susan Layden found inside a shopping cart on a Brooklyn street

NYPD said a woman’s torso was found inside a large bag in a shopping cart near the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Atlantic Avenue on March 3rd at approximately 1:45am.

Police were alerted by a man who went to push the cart when he noticed a bag inside that contained the torso, which was missing a head, arms and legs, according to police.

The victim has not been identified at this point. An autopsy is scheduled to determine cause of death and the victim’s identity.

On March 7, a human leg was discovered in a trash bag near the corner of Jamaica Avenue and Wyona Street. 

Update:
On March 11, Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell and Chief of Detectives James Essig announced updated charges against 83-year-old Harvey Marcelin. Marcelin was originally charged with concealment of a human corpse when they were arrested on March 10th. Those charges have been upgraded to murder.

Harvey Marcelin (pictured below) who identifies as She/Her was allegedly caught dumping human remains near her apartment, at 50 Pennsylvania Avenue, on surveillance footage. According to the New York Post that a search warrant of Marcelin’s home allegedly uncovered a human head of Susan Layden, 68. The cause of death has been revealed as homicidal violence including blunt force trauma to the head.

Sources identified the victim as Susan Leyden, 68, formerly of Teaneck, New Jersey, and an acquaintance of Marcelin. She was last seen entering Marcelin's apartment

AMNY reported that Marcelin had previously been convicted of murder in 1963 for shooting her then-girlfriend, Jacqueline Bonds. She had also previously been convicted of homicide and was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison, and was released in 1984 on lifetime parole.

In November 1985, Marcelin stabbed another woman to death and dumped her body in Central Park. Marcelin pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in 1986 and was sentenced to six to 12 years in prison. She was released on parole in 2019.
