Detectives are working to identify a human torso found floating in the East River on the evening of February 5 at around 5:30 p.m., near Governors Island, by a ferry crew who initially spotted a suitcase in the water.
The crew attempted to retrieve the suitcase but couldn’t lift it due to its weight. The NYPD’s Harbor Unit was alerted, and the suitcase was retrieved and transported to Pier 16 in the Financial District.
Inside, police found the torso of an adult male wrapped in a sleeping bag. The time the remains had been in the water is still unknown.
Update: Christian Millet, 24, was arrested on February 12th and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the brutal death of his roommate Edwin Echevarria, 65.
The homicide allegedly occurred when Millet and Echevarria engaged in a heated argument over food, which resulted in Echevarria being stabbed multiple times.
After the murder, Millet allegedly dismembered the Echevarria before wrapping his torso in a sleeping bag and placing the remains in a suitcase that was dumped into the East River. The location of the remainder of Echevarria’s remains is unknown.
