Three NYPD officers responded to a mother about needing help with her adult son, 47-year-old Lashawn McNeil, at an apartment at 119 West 135th Street at around 6:15 p.m on January 21st.
Police arrived at the scene and after talking to the woman, made their way down the hall to a back bedroom. At that point McNeil swung the door open and fired at the officers. The third officer shot McNeil when he was trying to flee, striking him in the head and arm according to NYPD. He was taken to hospital where he remains in critical condition.
The murdered officer has been identified as Jason Rivera, 22, (left) who had been on the force since 2020. The injured officer is, 27-year-old Wilbert Mora, (right) who joined the force in 2018. Mora remains in hospital in critical condition.
NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said a stolen Glock .45 with high-capacity magazine was recovered at the scene.

Gunman, Lashawn McNeil, 47, died of his injuries at a Harlem Hospital on January 24th.
Update January 25th
NYPD Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell announced on January 25th that Wilbert Mora has died from his injuries.
