On January 2nd, 2020 Richard Washington was stabbed twice in the neck while waiting on the Manhattan-bound platform at the Rockaway Boulevard A train station.

On Jan. 20, 2022, Brian Moolenaar, 64, of Ocean Promenade in Rockaway Park was arrested and charged with attempted murder and two counts of assault for the attack.

NYPD announced that Washington died of injuries sustained in the attack on May 12th, 2023. The investigation into his assault is now deemed a homicide.
