NYPD were called to 571 Lincoln Place, on May 15th at around 1:00pm.
Police arrived at the scene to find 9-year-old Shalom Guifarrow severely bruised and unresponsive in her bedroom. She was pronounced at the scene. Shalom was found with cuts and bruises to her head and trauma to her back, which could be bites. An autopsy was conducted and revealed Shalom died from blunt force trauma, the cause of death ruled a homicide.
Police believe the mother called 911 after she disciplined the girl and put her in timeout, and the girl lost consciousness. Police said the mother lived in the apartment with her two daughters and two dogs, but said they do not believe they are responsible for the possible bite marks, and they may have also been disciplined by the mother.
Shemene Cato, 48, the mother of the victim faces charges, including murder, manslaughter, assault, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of a weapon.
Update December 2023
Shemene allegedly attacked the 9-year-old with an electrical cord and a broom, before dropping a bed on the girl who was hiding from her mother, during an argument over a missing tablet.
On December 15th Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez sentenced Shemene Cato to 15-years in prison.
