According to reports GuiYing Ma, 61, was sweeping her front sidewalk on November 26, 2021 in Jackson Heights when a homeless man attacked her and beat her with a rock.

Ma was rushed to the hospital and treated for a right skull fracture, facial fractures and internal bleeding on her brain. She died of her injuries on February 24th, 2022.

The attacker was identified as Elisaul Perez, 32. He was charged with assault, however, police and prosecutors did not consider it a hate crime. Police said his charges could be upgraded.
