Edwin Cruz Gomez allegedly intentionally hit a girl with his vehicle in Queens

A Long Island man, Edwin Cruz Gomez, 38, has been charged with murder and multiple other offenses after allegedly driving his SUV into a family in Queens, killing a 16-year-old girl, Jhoanny Gomez-Alvarez, and injuring her mother and stepfather.

According to reports, the incident occurred early on the morning of September 13 outside a restaurant on Roosevelt Avenue.

According to prosecutors, Cruz Gomez was drunk and began harassing the teen and her mother, offering them money for sex. After a physical altercation with the girl’s stepfather, Cruz Gomez allegedly got into his vehicle, drove onto the sidewalk, and intentionally hit the family, pinning the teen against a pole. He then fled the scene but later approached police officers, claiming he had been assaulted and led them back to the crash site, where he was arrested.

Cruz Gomez faces charges including second-degree murder, attempted murder, vehicular manslaughter, and DUI. He is being held and is due back in court on September 19.
