According to police, officers responded to reports of gunfire outside a mixed-use building on Grand Concourse shortly after 2:30 a.m on June 4th. When they arrived, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds to his chest and groin.
Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to Saint Barnabas Hospital, but despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead. Investigators have not yet publicly identified the victim.
Police have not released information regarding a possible motive, and no suspect description was immediately available. As of now, no arrests have been made and the investigation remains active.
The homicide comes as the 46th Precinct experiences a sharp increase in murders this year. Police data shows six homicides have been recorded in the precinct through the end of May, compared with two during the same period last year. While murders have risen significantly, the number of shooting incidents has declined compared with last year.
The increase in killings stands in contrast to broader citywide trends, as the NYPD recently reported historically low levels of major crime in several categories across New York City.
