The NYPD said officers were responding to a report of an assault around 2:30 p.m. When they arrived, they found the building on fire. The FDNY dispatched 12 units and about 60 personnel, and the fire was brought under control just over two hours later, at 4:38 p.m.
Inside, police found 50-year-old Qiujin Shi unconscious and unresponsive, with a stab wound to her abdomen. She and the 17-year-old were rushed to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, where Shi later died of her injuries.
The suspect, Weisheng Chen, was a resident at the home on 45-18 Smart Street. Police said he fatally stabbed 50-year-old Qiujin Shi, who is believed to be his mother-in-law, based on multiple news reports.
According to reports, Chen faces serious charges:
- 4 counts each of assault and criminal possession of a weapon
- 6 counts of murder
- 2 counts of arson
