NYPD responded to a 911 call reporting an assault in progress at the 242 Street–Van Cortlandt Park station just after 3 a.m on May 12th.
When police arrived, they found an unconscious man on a southbound 1 train. He was taken to hospital but later pronounced dead.
According to preliminary findings, the man had been involved in a physical altercation with 68-year-old Keith Plummer, who was reportedly sleeping in the train car at the time. According to AMNY, the situation escalated after the victim allegedly struck or poked Plummer with a cane, leading to a struggle inside the subway car.
During the incident, police say Plummer restrained the man, who then suffered a medical emergency and went into cardiac arrest.
Plummer has since been charged with manslaughter as the investigation continues.
