NYPD responded to reports of gunfire at Starlight Park, near Sheridan Boulevard and East 174th Street in the Charlotte Gardens area at approximately 2:29 a.m. on September 4th.

Officers located a special needs man, 26-year-old Ronell Marte, with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported by EMS to Saint Barnabas Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet released his identity, pending notification of his family.

19-year-old Luis Alberto Lopez Castillo turned himself in to police at the 43rd Precinct on October 27. His suspected accomplice in the robbery, 20-year-old Axel Martinez, was arrested in the weeks after the killing.

According to reports, the death of Marte was the result of a botched robbery.
