Jamel McGriff arrested – Queens House Fire Turns Homicide: Two Seniors Killed, Suspect at Large After Bellerose Arson

Emergency crews responded to a fire at 87-86 254th Street in Queens at approximately 3:20 p.m. on September 8th.

Firefighters arrived quickly and extinguished the flames, but tragically discovered two elderly residents deceased inside the residence. According to AMNY, Emergency responders found 78-year-old Maureen Olton dead on the first floor, and Frank Olton was discovered tied up in the basement. Both victims suffered burn injuries.

Investigators say the suspect had been seen earlier that day visiting several homes in the area, requesting to use a phone charger. After being turned away multiple times, he approached the back entrance of the Bellerose home, where 77-year-old Frank Olton reportedly allowed him inside.

Police are searching for the suspect, described as a male between 30 and 40 years old, of medium build. He was last seen wearing a black cap, black jacket, blue jeans, and black sneakers.

Update: Jamel McGriff was arrested on September 10th at West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue in Times Square. Police say they identified him through purchases made with a stolen credit card and footage from surveillance cameras. He is expected to be charged with two counts of murder on September 11th.
