NYPD responded after receiving a 911 call reporting an assault in progress at the River Park Towers, located at 30 Richman Plaza in Morris Heights on April 2nd.
When officers arrived, they found 21-year-old Justin Chatfield, a resident of the building, with a gunshot wound to the torso. He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Authorities believe the shooting happened following a dispute at the location, though the exact circumstances leading up to the incident are still unknown.
76-year-old Gilbert Smalls, who also lived at the same address was charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon.
