According to authorities, Adonis, who was autistic and nonverbal, was brought to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln by his mother, 36-year-old Geneva Jarvis. Medical staff notified police after discovering signs of severe malnutrition, and the child was later pronounced dead.
The Bronx District Attorney’s Office said investigators found that Adonis and his twin brother, who is also autistic and nonverbal, had suffered from severe neglect. Prosecutors allege the boys were found with bedsores, covered in feces, and surrounded by flies. Both children also had a documented history of seizures.
Police said Adonis’ twin brother was located and taken to a rehabilitation facility, where he was found weighing about 60 pounds. A neighbor later reported that the surviving child was doing well.
According to reports, a resident of the building told reporters she had not seen the brothers for approximately three years. She said the last time she saw them, they appeared healthy, dressed, and were with their mother and grandmother.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Adonis Jarvis’ death a homicide. Geneva Jarvis and 62-year-old Denise Jarvis have both been charged with murder and pleaded not guilty in court. A judge has also ordered both women to stay away from the surviving twin.
