Police were called to 40-38 Case Street shortly before 6 p.m. on August 3rd after a first-floor resident discovered 46-year-old Lidio Castro-Cruz lying face down in a basement stairwell, bleeding heavily. Officers arrived to find the victim with a stab wound to his chest. EMS transported him to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Rosendo Lopez, 35, who lives at 40-38 Case Street, was arraigned on August 5 in Queens Criminal Court. He faces charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon, following the murder of Lidio Castro-Cruz inside their shared three-family residence.

Lopez was identified as a person of interest after officers spoke with witnesses at the scene. According to the criminal complaint, he later made statements to investigators that led to his arrest on Monday evening. Authorities say Lopez admitted to stabbing Castro-Cruz in the upper torso, resulting in his death.

He was arraigned Tuesday night before Judge Marty Lenz and remains in custody without bail.
