NYPD were called to the area near East Drive and East 74th Street around 9:43 a.m. on September 27th after receiving a report of an unconscious person.
Officers found the 63-year-old woman unresponsive and suffering from severe head trauma. Emergency medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.
Investigators believe the woman had been living in the park. She was found barefoot and covered in dirt, and police suspect she was struck in the head with a stick.
A 36-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with her death. Authorities say the case marks the park’s first homicide in several years.
Police arrested Jonathan Robles, 36, later Sunday evening. He faces charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Authorities identified him as a resident of the Barbour Hotel, a Midtown shelter for people experiencing homelessness.
Robles later surrendered to detectives and was taken to a hospital for evaluation while awaiting an expected arraignment.
