John, 48, was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment last September. Nurlan John’s death was officially ruled a homicide by the city’s medical examiner in August 2026. The city medical examiner later ruled that his gunshot and spinal injuries, along with heart disease and high blood pressure, contributed to his death and classified it as a homicide.
The ruling has reopened painful memories for his family, who have long wanted answers. Two people were arrested after the 2000 shooting, but no one was ever indicted. The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office is now reviewing the case.
Despite living in a wheelchair, John continued to enjoy life as a DJ, cook, and active member of his community. His family now hopes the renewed attention will finally lead to justice.
